Real change begins with people who dare to act

As Professor of New Business Models, I feel honored to once again present the Changemaker Award this year on our festive stage on May 28 at HZ University of Applied Sciences. I initiated the award in 2024 in honor of my professorship, because I see our HZ Changemakers as proof that sustainable entrepreneurship and innovation, fully aligned with the vision of our Knowledge Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, can truly make a difference.
“These stories show how ideas can grow into movements with lasting impact”
And now we are already preparing for the third edition of the HZ Changemaker Award. The number of nominees continues to grow. This strengthens our belief that we have a tremendous potential of changemakers within our community. Every year, we are inspired and deeply moved by the nominations we receive. Each and every one of them tells a memorable and inspiring story. This year especially, we realize how extraordinary their dedication truly is, and that is why we are proud to share their inspiration with a wider audience through this publication.
Not obstacles, but opportunities
Changemakers are people who see opportunities where others see obstacles. In their own unique ways, they contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient society. From social initiatives to technological innovations, and from local community projects to international impact, these changemakers demonstrate that real change begins with taking action.
What connects them is their ability to bring people together, challenge existing systems, and create tangible solutions. They look beyond conventional paths and combine entrepreneurship with social engagement. Whether it concerns circularity, healthcare, education, wellbeing, or the living environment, these stories show how ideas can evolve into movements with lasting impact.
“What connects them is their ability to bring people together and challenge systems”
These changemakers inspire not only through what they achieve, but especially through how they achieve it: with courage, perseverance, and the conviction that things can — and must — be done differently. Many of them say they are not doing it for applause. Precisely for that reason, the Changemaker Award gives them the stage they deserve: a moment where recognition takes center stage, and where these inspiring doers receive the applause they may not seek, but most certainly deserve.
Jury Award and Audience Award
As every year, selecting a winner for this edition will once again be incredibly difficult. However, I have complete confidence in our jury process, in which we carefully and respectfully weigh all considerations. In addition to the Jury Award, there will also be an Audience Award this year. So be sure to vote for your favorite changemaker and help decide who inspires you most with their story.
