The encounter at the centre
Peter van der Heide

Peter van der Heide, HZ lecturer and nominated as Changemaker due to his commitment to Stichting Present Terneuzen, brings volunteers and people in need together in his role as project coordinator. He does this by organising concrete, practical projects that directly contribute to people’s daily lives.
Stichting Present Terneuzen
The starting point of Stichting Present Terneuzen is simple yet powerful: people help each other by doing things together. No long-term programmes or complex care structures, but one-off projects in which volunteers support people who could use a helping hand.
This can range from renovating a child’s bedroom to organising social activities or supporting households in vulnerable situations. In all these projects, the encounter is central.
Practical and accessible
What distinguishes Peter is his ability to organise connection in a practical and accessible way. He brings municipalities, companies, social organisations, and volunteers together and ensures that collaboration is actually put into practice. By actively raising funds and building networks, he has expanded the foundation’s reach across Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. As a result, more and more people are being reached with relatively simple means, but with great social value.
The impact of the work is visible on multiple levels. People who receive help not only experience practical improvements in their living environment, but also renewed perspective and social connection. For example, women can learn to cycle, increasing their independence, or families can improve their living conditions, making daily life easier. At the same time, volunteers themselves become engaged and motivated to contribute again.
Powerful reciprocity
This reciprocity is exactly what makes the initiative so powerful: it does not only help, it connects. A movement emerges in which people continue to find and strengthen each other.
Peter shows that social change does not always have to be large or complex. By simply doing, bringing people together, and creating space for encounter, impact is created that reaches far beyond the project itself.
