Creating opportunities for young people
Salim Ben Sellam

Creating opportunities where others see problems. That is the core of Salim Ben Sellam’s work, a former Social Work and PABO student at HZ, through his efforts within Oase Jeugdhulpverlening in Vlissingen.
Oase Youth Care Services
Through his organisation, he works daily with young people who need additional support, but above all focuses on their potential and opportunities.
Instead of approaching young people solely from a care or behavioural problem perspective, Salim chooses an integrated approach in which talent development is central. He connects education, sport, and social care to provide young people with perspective, structure, and opportunities for growth. In doing so, the focus shifts from what is going wrong to what can be strengthened.
Expanding opportunities
What makes his approach distinctive is the combination of practical and social initiatives. Through coaching, sports activities, youth conferences, and projects such as “Alleen Jij Bepaalt” (“Only You Decide”), young people are actively involved in their own development. They are not only guided but also take responsibility and actively participate in their environment.
The impact is clearly visible. Young people develop greater self-confidence, gain more structure in their daily lives, and increase their opportunities in education, work, and society. At the same time, the environment also changes: sports clubs become more inclusive and increasingly offer space to young people who were previously excluded.
Talents at the centre
Salim works from the belief that sustainable change arises through connection. By bringing together social care, education, and sport, he creates an approach that goes beyond traditional youth care. He looks not only at the individual, but also at the network and context in which young people grow up.
With Oase Youth Care Services, he shows that real impact emerges when you dare to look at possibilities instead of limitations. By actively involving young people and placing their talents at the centre, he not only helps them move forward, but also changes the way youth care is perceived.
