Kick Off week was a roaring success
First-year students kicked off the academic year with the festive introduction week. The perfect way to get to know each other and their (new) environment.
Team building and fun
HZ Community organised the programme of activities, focusing on team building and fun. Expedition Robinson on the Badstrand, an exciting Escape Box at the HZ and a GPS-tour through Vlissingen and Middelburg. The programme was full of diversity.
Great turnout
In total, some 875 students took part, across 15 study programmes. It was not noticeable that they were meeting each other for the first time, thanks to their fanatical participation. The first bonds were forged and the organisation looks back on a successful start of the academic year, thanks to you!
Kickoff Festival Zeeland
We closed the Kick Off week with the Kickoff Festival Zeeland. Top artists The Partysquad, Boer Harm and Dansado and the Feestmeester performed at the Machinefabriek in Vlissingen. Wondering if you shone in the aftermovie? You can find it on the Kickoff Festival's Instagram page!

Every third or fourth Thursday of the month, experienced and inexperienced HZ students come together at podium De Piek in Vlissingen. The sessions are from 19.30 to 22.30 and registration is not necessary. Will we see you there?
- Thursday 19 September
- Thursday 17 October
- Thursday 14 November
- Thursday 12 December
Address: Hellebardierstraat 13, Vlissingen
Practising in the Music Room
Would you like to practise before the session? Or is once a month far too little to make music together? Then you can practise in the Music Room. You will find this room in the Music Barracks, behind the HZ on Edisonweg. You can book the Music Room and its instruments for free via the Self Service Portal.

A large amount raised
HZ graduates worked to ensure that cancer is no longer a deadly disease. And they raised a whopping €25,003. The total amount raised in Middelburg is €83,731 and the national tally stands at €3,205,956! We are extremely proud of the students and colleagues who contributed!
HZ Debate team travels to Marrakesh
Practising the art of debate and participating in various debate competitions and activities. That's what the HZ Debate Team is all about.
In 2023, lecturers Kevin (Social Work) and Arjan (Social Work and Primary Education Teacher) started the HZ Debate Team, driven by their own passion for debating. They guide the student team and together they prepare for national and international competitions. In November this year, a contest in Marrakesh (!) is even planned.
Participating in the HZ Debate Team
For now, the HZ Debate Team consists of students from the HEW domain. But did you know that students from all over HZ are welcome to participate? You are cordially invited to attend a meeting of the team on a Tuesday in the late afternoon. To do so, please email.

'Peukenzee' helps HZ to prevent smoking on campus
Did you know that the HZ grounds are smoke-free? At HZ, we are committed to a smoke-free generation. That is why smoking has been banned on campus since 2020. This applies to the locations Edisonweg in Vlissingen and Het Groene Woud and the Joint Research Centre Zeeland (JRCZ) in Middelburg. Will you help to keep the HZ sites clean and nature friendly?
Peukenzee (Sea of cigarette butts)
You may have seen them: on Tuesday 10 September, representatives of Peukenzee were guests at HZ. They handed out small bag ashtrays in which you can store your butts until you can dispose of them in the bin or the specially placed butt post. You can find these poles at the edge of the HZ grounds. When a pole is full, it is collected and the waste is recycled.
Quitting smoking
Do you need help to stop smoking? You can contact the free Stop Line (0800-1995) for tips.
