Information and Communication Technology
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is at the heart of today’s connected world. From apps and smart devices to AI and data security, ICT drives innovation across every sector. By studying ICT, you learn how to design, build, and manage the systems that power our digital lives, equipping you with skills that are in high demand worldwide.
Steps to study abroad
About the programme
IT often involves programming and system management. But it is so much more than that. Brainstorming about a good software solution for a customer, coming up with a cloud solution, building a new application, collecting and interpreting data to advise a company or tackling cyber security. The possibilities are endless. Whether you want to develop in the direction of the business side or the technical side. In the course of your studies we will help you to discover which direction suits you best and we teach you everything about the latest technologies and trends.
Why study ICT at HZ?

Small classes, lots of attention
Learn in a supportive environment where small class sizes mean more interaction, personal guidance, and closer contact with lecturers and fellow students.

Gain practical experience
From your first year you work on real projects with organisations in Zeeland and beyond. Fieldwork, teamwork, and applied research are central, so you’re not just learning theory, you’re solving real-world water challenges

Access to cutting-edge facilities
Study in the brand-new Joint Research Center Zeeland (JRCZ), where you use ultramodern labs and work alongside researchers and students from various disciplines, putting you right at the heart of innovation in water science.
Customize your studies with a minor, internship and study track
At HZ, you have plenty of opportunities to tailor your ICT degree to your interests. You can choose a minor that aligns with your specialisation or explore a different area within the field, either in the Netherlands or abroad. You will also complete an internship, either in the Netherlands or abroad, with an organisation in your field. You are free to choose where you want to do this.
"I chose for this study programme because I'm very interested in programming and everything about computers. When I read about the course, I immediately liked it. In the first year, you’re already making games, which is really fun and impactful. HZ was also the first university that replied to me, and my parents saw the course overview and said: "Wow, this is amazing."
Information and Communication Technology in short
Study at HZ
You start with the basics of software engineering. While working in small teams on real projects, you build your skills step by step. You focus on three key themes:
- Computer Science: learn how computers work and start coding.
- Game Development: create your own game and learn how to code using object-oriented programming.
- Modern Software Development : learn how websites and apps are built using frameworks and put your skills to the test by working on a real project for an external client.
Study at HZ
This year you work on projects for actual companies. Together with your team, you find smart IT solutions that meet the needs of your client and you focus on two key themes:
- Business & Innovation: creating IT solutions and use creative thinking to design valuable, user-friendly products with your team.
- Data Science: dive deeper into topics such as machine learning, cloud computing and data visualization, along with entrepreneurship and the ethical side of working with data.
Minor and internship abroad in NL or abroad
You choose one of the two study tracks: Software Engineering or Data Science.
- Internship: Your internship (in the Netherlands or abroad) is centered on your chosen study track.
- Minor: you broaden your knowledge by choosing a minor in NL or abroad, such as Cybersecurity or Game Design. The choice of your minor is up to you.
Graduation internship in NL or abroad
The first semester is dedicated to your study track of choice. You conclude the study programme with a graduation research project at a company in The Netherlands or abroad.
Study tracks
In the third year you get to choose from one of the following study tracks: Software Engineering or Data Science. Software Engineering (SE) In the Software Engineer track, you'll learn how to design, develop, and maintain smart software solutions that power everything from apps to entire business systems. You'll build a strong foundation in coding, system architecture, and agile teamwork while working on real-life projects with companies. This track is perfect for students who love solving complex problems and want to create the digital tools of tomorrow.
Data Science (DS) The Data Scientist track focuses on unlocking the power of data to drive smart decisions. You'll dive into statistics, machine learning, and data visualization while learning to turn raw information into valuable insights. With hands-on projects and practical tools, you'll be prepared to tackle real-world challenges in areas like business, health, and sustainability using data-driven solutions.
Study in a cutting-edge research environment
Right next to the campus of HZ Middelburg, you find the Joint Research Center Zeeland (JRCZ), a state-of-the-art research institute where several educational institutions collaborate on real-world challenges. As a student, you have access to ultramodern laboratories equipped with the latest technology and techniques, giving you the chance to work and learn at the forefront of innovation.
Entry requirements
There are three 3 different requirements for your admission: 1. General requirements: Diploma Equal to Dutch HAVO, determined by Nuffic (Organisation for International Education in the Netherlands.) To see if you would be admissible, check the list of foreign diplomas on our website: www.hz.nl/requirements. 2. Specific study programme requirements Depending on your chosen programme, you may need to meet additional requirements. Check www.hz.nl/requirements for additional requirements. 3. Language requirements As an international student you might need to submit an official English language certificate, proving you have a sufficient command of written and spoken English. Your level of English needs to have an equivalent of the IELTS score of 6.0. For exemptions to this language requirement, see www.hz.nl/requirements.
